Evaluation of helicopter handling qualities improvements during a steep approach using new piloting modes.
In AHS American Helicopter - 55th Annual Forum, Montreal (Canada), 25 - 27 May 1999. AHS.
The paper describes the evaluation of two new piloting modes in terme of handling qualities improvements during a helicopter steep approach. The new piloting modes are the Translational Rate Commande (TRC) and the Speed & Glide Slope control (SGS) In order to simulate the behaviour of a BO105 helicopter equipped with either the TRC or the SGS, two Conceptual Simulation Models (CSM) are developed and implemented on the DLR ground based simulator ar Braunschweig. A steep approach scenario is also defined and is available on this simulator. The task consists of a dynamic descent of the helicopter from 500 m altitude to approximetely 100 m with an average slope angle of -8° Dynamic descent means that the slope angle, the heading and the speed are varying and the pilot has to follow these variations with a required precision. Handling Qualitie investigations organised at Braunschweig with 4 pilots particpation provided comparisons of the 2 piloting modes (TRC & SGS)with existing configurations (basic BO105, RCAH : Rate Commande Attitude Hold, ACAH : Attitude Command Attitude Hold). Good and promising results on TRC and SGS demonstrated the high interest of this kind of piloting modes in specific missions of helicopters where the trajectory control is primordial.

Hinfini control for a flexible transmission system.
European Journal of Control, 5(2-4):185-192, May 1999.
The aim of this paper is to synthesise a discrete-time Hinfini controller for a flexible transmission system, proposed as a benchmark at the 1995 European Control Conference. A set of design specifications in both time and frequency domains is to be met for the three available plants models. The final Hinfini controller compares favourably with previously proposed controllers : nearly all design specifications are satisfied despite the low complexity of the control law.
